The ongoing development work at the new fishing port in UAQ Khor (Creek) is to be completed in October this year, reports the Khaleej Times.
The new scheme is to have 72 floating docks and a spacious car parking, apart from all fishing requirements, tools, spare parts, and a maintenance workshop.
Hussain Al Hajiri, head of the UAQ Fishing Society, said the project is aimed at easing the suffering of Emirati fishermen, providing them with alternative wharfs, encouraging them to keep fishing, and thereby preserving the profession.
“The new fishing port is located very close to the fish, vegetables and fruits market at the UAQ Khor, and that will help fishermen to shift their fishes directly to the market.”
Al Hajiri said the project is in line with the initiatives of the President, His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, to develop the fishing ports across the country and preserve the profession.
“The new port is an alternative to the old one, known as ‘Al Farda’, which collapsed in the last few years as a result of not being maintained or developed for 35 years now.” Meanwhile, the UAQ Fishing Society is geared up with a blueprint for an ice factory project to be built close to the fishing market and new Khor port on a plot of land allocated by the Planning and Survey Department.
“Though 72 floating wharfs are already there in the new fishing port, more docks will be fixed to suit the 130 national fishermen registered in the emirate.” Al Hajiri noted that the Society spares no effort to support the Emirati fishermen, and provides them with all the fishing tools and requirements they may need at a low price. “We also help them with technical support and advice, apart from maintenance work at a special workshop here.”
