McCarthy Building Companies Inc , a Texas builder since 1980, was awarded a Safety Through Exemplary Performance (STEP) Gold Award for the firm’s work on phase two of The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) Campus Landscape project.
This is McCarthy’s second Gold STEP award – the first was in 2010 from UT MD Anderson’s Alkek Hospital Expansion project, which was UT MD Anderson’s first gold safety recognition.
The UT System recognizes general contractors that maintain excellent safety records with gold or silver STEP awards. The honors are given out based on criteria requiring safety inspections; review of injury and claims records, both workers’ compensation and general liability; and overall safety management by the general contractor in all aspects of a Rolling Owner Controlled Insurance Program (ROCIP) project.
“At McCarthy we’ve made the quest for a zero injury work environment not just a priority but a core tenet of our company,”said Billy Naylor, safety director for McCarthy’s Texas Division. “The STEP Gold Award from UTD proves once again that our partners recognize our continuous efforts in keeping everyone safe and gives us a chance to thank the employees who make safety their priority every day.”
The UTD Campus Landscape Enhancement Project II consists of landscape and hardscape upgrades, to enhance roughly 575,000 square-feet of the UTD campus. Landscape improvements include the excavation and grading of the site, soil preparation, installing underground utilities, upgrading irrigation systems, and new trees, shrubs, groundcover and sod. The hardscape aspect includes ramps, stairways, flatwork, architectural colored concrete sidewalks, and limestone seat walls.
McCarthy’s Texas Division adds the Gold STEP Award to a growing list of other business and industry-based awards the firm has received, including a 2015 Excellence in Construction Award from the American Subcontractors Association (ASA) for work on the Baylor College of Medicine Neurosensory Lab, and a 2016 Deal of the Year Award from the Houston Business Journal for work on the Museum of Fine Arts Houston.
