Lendlease has won a contract for the main works of Prince of Wales Hospital’s new Acute Services Building in Randwick, New South Wales (NSW) in Australia.

The new Acute Services Building is planned to be built to the west of the existing Randwick Hospitals’ Campus.

The work is a part of the NSW Government’s A$720m (£403m) Randwick Campus Redevelopment project to help transform health services for the Randwick community.

Lendlease will employ approximately 600 workers at the peak of construction in mid-2020.

Scheduled for opening in 2022, the Acute Services Building will feature expanded adult emergency department, expanded psychiatric emergency care centre, expanded intensive care unit, new rapid assessment unit including a virtual care centre, and replacement of existing inpatient wards and provision of additional inpatient beds.

It will also include a neurosciences floor, four new digital operating theatres, a new and expanded central sterilising service department, and a new helipad serving the Randwick Hospitals Campus.

Lendlease Building Australia chief executive officer Dale Connor said: “Construction of the new Acute Services Building will ensure the NSW Government benefits from our proven health and hospitals expertise, which have been developed through successful delivery of the Gosford Hospital Redevelopment, Victoria’s Bendigo Hospital and the Sunshine Coast University Hospital in Queensland.

“Importantly, we are partnering with NSW Government on a strong commitment to create more jobs in local communities for women, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, the long-term unemployed and apprentices as part of the project’s delivery.

“Today’s announcement follows more than 18 months of successful collaboration between Lendlease, NSW Government and other key stakeholders on this important project.”

Construction of the Acute Services Building will include preparatory works involving piling and bulk excavation, as well as the construction of a 13-storey hospital building and a rooftop helipad.

It also includes the construction of two pedestrian and clinical bridge links over Hospital Road connecting the existing Randwick Hospitals Campus; road improvements and construction of a new signalised intersection, internal roads and public drop-off areas.
