After months of setbacks, Mumbai is now launching a scheme to spruce up its streets with a wide array of street furniture. Subodh Kumar, Municipal Commissioner of Mumbai has approved plans to enable private developers to create experimental and/or functional installations on a number of streets in the city in exchange for advertising rights.

10% of the revenues gained will be given to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Suggested proposals for the scheme include a concrete bench system wrapped around a tree upon which ‘tasteful’ advertising can be hung; a bus stop composed of vertical gardens and recycled sleeper wood; and a solar paneled, back-lit bus stop.
