Construction work has commenced on the LBJ Freeway extension project in Texas, US.The $2bn project involves completely rebuilding the section of I-635, known as LBJ Freeway, between I-35E and North Central Expressway. Contractor Trinity Infrastructure carrying out the project notes that initially work will be done to reconstruct bridges crossing I-635, starting with Rosser Road and the Joe Ratcliff Pedestrian Walkway in the coming months.
Portions of high-occupancy-vehicle (HOV) lanes have been closed between Interstate 35E and US 75, in order to replace them with a six-lane toll tunnel and eight free lanes above.
LBJ frontage roads and non-toll lanes will also be developed.
Upon completion, the freeway will have four free lanes in each direction and three managed toll lanes between Interstate 35 and Highway 75.
The project will double the capacity of the freeway to accommodate nearly 600,000 vehicles daily and will be completed in five years.
