Canadian government invests nearly $3 million to advance sustainable wood technologies in Montreal

The Canadian government is investing $2.8 million to support sustainable construction technologies and zero-emission vehicle initiatives in Montreal. The funding, provided through Natural Resources Canada’s Green Construction through Wood (GCWood) program and the Zero Emission Vehicle Awareness Initiative (ZEVAI), will support three projects led by FPInnovations. These initiatives aim to reduce emissions and expand the use of low-carbon Canadian wood in the construction industry.

FPInnovations will use over $2.5 million from the GCWood program to conduct research and market analysis on innovative wood-based building systems. This work will help integrate these systems into Canadian building codes, supporting the construction of taller, larger wood buildings and contributing to Canada’s 2030 and 2050 emissions reduction targets under the Paris Agreement. These advancements are expected to accelerate the adoption of renewable and sustainable resources in the construction sector.

An additional $212,000 from ZEVAI will fund efforts by FPInnovations to promote zero-emission vehicles and clean fuel technologies in the forestry and commercial transportation sectors. These initiatives include demonstrations and trials to help phase in zero-emission vehicles, which are crucial for reducing the 18% of Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions attributed to on-road transportation.
