Esh Construction has received a contract for enabling works on the Newstead general housing site and older people’s independent living projects in Birley, Sheffield in the UK.

The contract, which is worth £1.5m, will help to create more than 200 new homes. Procured through the YORhub YORcivil2 framework, the scheme will be delivered on behalf of Sheffield City Council. It forms part of the wider Birley master plan.

Under the contract, Esh will be responsible for major earthworks to contour the site, as well as the creation of level platforms for the latest developments.

The firm will also build new access routes, green corridor spaces, and footpaths.

The contract will also involve the installation of main drainage, together with a large surface water attenuation tank.

Esh construction director Steven Garrigan said: “This scheme is among a number of recent contract awards which have boosted our civil engineering portfolio in the Yorkshire region, and we’re delighted to be once again working in partnership with Sheffield City Council.

“This is a great opportunity for Esh to support the wider transformation programme underway on the Newstead site through our culture of employing local, procuring local and engaging local.”
Esh said that the 77 new family homes and proposed large-scale older people’s independent living project have already received planning approval.

The independent living project is expected to contribute to Sheffield City Council’s aim to increase housing by 3,100 homes by 2029.

Peak Architects director Patrick Arends said: “We are extremely excited to be working with Sheffield City Council and Esh in the provision of high-quality, affordable family living and delighted to be playing an integral role in the enhancement of this existing community.”
