Vinci Construction UK has been awarded a £27 million contract to design and build an Tesco distribution centre at Whitely, South Reading, UK.

The 84,000 square metre distribution centre, which will be constructed on the site of a former Heineken brewery overlooking junction 11 of the M4, will include a vehicle maintenance unit, a vehicle wash and refuelling facility and a gate house.

Construction work on the building will be completed to BREEAM standards and will emit 34% less carbon dioxide than the levels imposed by the 2010 building regulations. Upon completion, the project will create employment opportunities for over 1,000 people in the region.

Initially, Tesco plans to build an 800,000 square feet distribution at Andover, but the plan was thwarted by a local anti-megashed campaign. The project has secured planning permission in September 2011.
