Sahara Petrochemicals Co said that Saudi Butanol Co – a joint venture between affiliate company Saudi Acrylic Acid Co, Saudi Kayan Petrochemicals and Sadara Chemical Co – has signed an EPC contract with South Korean company Daelim to build a proposed new Butanol plant at Jubail Industrial City.

The contract is worth SR: 1.1bn ($293.3m) and work is expected to start on site in January next year, with a view to completion taking place in May 2015.

The plant has been designed to produce 330,000 tonnes of n-butanol and 11,000 tonnes of iso-butanol a year.

Meanwhile, Daelim held a signing ceremony at the end of last month for a $175m Fluid Catalytic Cracker and acid water treatment facility for Kuwait National Petroluem Co (KNPC) as part of the latter’s Clean Fuels Project, which involves expanding KNPC’s large-scale Mina Al-Ahmadi refinery some 35km south of Kuwait City. Daelim said that the project will take two years to complete.
